Playing with Light

While most of Britain was suffering torrential rain and floods, my friends and I were enjoying fine weather on the Norfolk coast for a weekend camping trip. While sitting round the camp-fire, someone brought out sparklers, which naturally led to people drawing and writing in the dark. I started taking long-exposure photos of these drawings, and then remembered a Strobist blog article, about firing the flash remotely from several locations in one long exposure. The results are shown below.

Cambridge Photowalk

I took part in Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photo Walk, which saw 7,500 photographers in 230 locations around the world go out together and take photos of their home cities. As I’ve lived in Cambridge for a long time, and photographed many of the buildings and scenes, I decided to start on a project that has been long overdue – creating a “Colour & Form” montage of my home town. I’ve already created several of these from other places I’ve visited, notably France, Costa Rica, Barcelona, South Africa and Italy. I managed to put together this rather nice one from a 2 hour walk through town. I now have plenty of ideas for creating a dozen more “Colour & Form” montages for Cambridge, so I’d better get cracking!

London Red Bull Air Race

A friend hosted a party the night before the Red Bull Air Race, and his apartment in London’s Docklands had a fantastic view over the race course the next morning. You wouldn’t have seen images of aeroplanes flying low and fast over central London a few years ago…

Taking my photos to the next level

I’ve seen some really impressive design work applied to fashion photos, so was inspired to have a go with some of my own photos. For some reason, I chose to undertake my first “respray” at 1am, and finished (or called it a night) at dawn. I can see elements in the image which are great, and some things which I should improve on next time, but it’s not bad for my first attempt (hopefully many more to come).

I also put together a montage of my favourite shots from the recent photoshoots with Erica.

Of interest photographically because I handheld the flashgun off-camera, which allowed for great variation in lighting.

Photoshoot with Greg (Mr Darcy)

Yet another photoshoot, taking advantage of the glorious weather. Unfortunately this one had been postponed a couple of times, and the weather has started to get a bit cloudier and colder. Breaking from my usual photoshoot habit, I thought I’d photograph a male model, partly so that I don’t focus solely on photographing beautiful women. I first met Greg at a formal dinner at his college, and he stood out for a couple of reasons – firstly, he’s well over 6 feet tall, he has long flowing hair, and at the time was wearing a top hat, tux and tails. I then bumped into him again at the CU Fashion Show Launch Party, where he was one of the models. Again, wearing his trademark outfit. I don’t think anyone but Greg could pull it off…

Photoshoot with Rebecca (Meadows)

I’ve been taking advantage of the glorious weather, and have been doing more photoshoots with my muses (5 this week). This is my third photoshoot with Rebecca (see photos from the first photoshoot, and of her acting headshots). The meadows on Lammas Land and Castle Mound were covered in Cow Parsley, which made for similar photos to the first shoot, but pretty much every photo I take of Rebecca is stunning, so I don’t mind repeating myself.

Rock'n'Roll – Sunset Silhouettes

A few hours after the orchard photoshoot with Sarah, and after a Rock’n’Roll practice, I invited a couple from the team back to mine for dinner. As we were walking up Castle Hill, I realised that the sun was about to set, we were right next to Castle Mound, and the couple were capable of doing some great acro. About a year ago, I started planning a set of photos of Cambridge Rock’n’Rollers striking acro poses in various parts of Cambridge, and one of the ideas was to get acro silhouettes on Castle Mound, especially a move called “Dirty Dancing”. The photos came out even better than I had envisaged last year, so now more team members are keen for their own photoshoots ;)

If you’d like to learn how to do some of these moves, come along to some of the excellent Rock’n’Roll classes – check out the team website:
