Dawn's Wedding Preparations

Another wedding photography first for me – getting pictures of the bride’s preparations. I was meant to drive to Dawn’s around midday, as I’d also be driving the bridesmaids to the chapel; alas, my car chose this morning to have a flat battery for the first time in months. Typical. At least it wasn’t last weekend when I had to drive 2 hours to Oxford to photograph Daniella & Clive’s wedding. Thankfully, a good friend gave me a lift at the last minute, and I arrived in time to find the bridesmaids wearing very funky hair accessories.

Daniella & Clive's Wedding

My first wedding where I didn’t know the couple before being asked to be their photographer. They were friends of a good friend of mine, and the parents said they really liked the insight and breadth of my portfolio. The wedding was one of the nicest I’ve been to; the venue (Poundon House near Oxford) was a very impressive private/stately home, the couple and their families were incredibly nice, and the weather decided to provide one day of blue sky among weeks of cloud and rain. I hope you’ll agree that the photos do the day justice.

The flashgun that I purchased last week turned out to be invaluable – the first three photos were taken in a very dimly-lit room (the bride had to be kept hidden from the guests outside, so the window shutters were closed) – the flash made everything bright and natural. Also, the couple wanted the outdoor formal photos to be taken in front of the house (in bright sunlight, which soon turned into one big shadow as the sun moved), so the flash helped light up people’s faces in the shadows. Finally, the party photos came out great, bouncing the flash off the marquee walls and ceiling. Thanks to Neil van Niekerk and his fantastic advice on flash photography technique.

Portrait with new flashgun

I bought a flashgun, the excellent Canon 430EX Speedlite, to help with my portrait and wedding photography. I’m photographing a wedding this weekend, and from past weddings I’ve photographed know that it will be very useful for formal photographs in sunlight, and for the after-dinner party.

To make sure I know how to use it on the day, I took a couple of photos of some friends.

Photoshoot with Megan

Another day, another photoshoot. Not that I’m becoming blasé or tired, I’m really enjoying taking lots of photos of great models, and practising my portrait photography – something I’ve been meaning to do for a while now. Today’s model was Megan, an actress/director/choreographer, again from Homerton (do they only accept good-looking students?!), and while we weren’t blessed with the golden sunlight of magic hour, St. John’s College in overcast conditions still proved to be a great backdrop for a model with a “great face” (as everyone keeps commenting).

Photoshoot with Erica & Adam

With two recent photoshoots already receiving myriad positive comments (notably “who’s that girl?!”, of Rebecca’s photoshoot), I was approached by someone I’d photographed at Cuppers Athletics, asking if I could take some photos of her and her boyfriend. As if serendipity hadn’t already showed up enough in my life, here it came again – while I was taking the high jump photographs of Erica, I thought that she’d make a good model, and now I was presented with an opportunity to photograph her. And she certainly proved to be a great model. These photos are of her with her boyfriend Adam, and I’ll post some more shots of Erica posing on her own.
The photos were taken, as usual, at magic hour; this time in Emmanuel College’s gardens.

Photoshoot with Rebecca

After the success (in my eyes and those of the models) of my last (first) portrait photoshoot with Steph, Ben and Lizzie, I finally got round to a 2nd photoshoot. This time, my muse was Rebecca, a beautiful student actress who has often graced the ADC stage, where I first noticed her. After a few rainchecks the gods of fate and timing were shining down on us, as the golden light of magic hour and the gardens at the back of St. John’s set the scene for a perfect photoshoot. I’ll let you be the judge…

I often marvel at the stunning photos of models and celebrities in glossy magazines like Vogue and Vanity Fair. For a long time, I’ve wanted to expand my photography repertoire and portfolio, and do more portrait work. I’ve already taken a few portraits for friends, but have always been on the lookout for more people to photograph, to work on my rapport with the model, giving direction for styles and poses, and to build a portfolio of portrait and fashion photographs to start getting some paid commissions.

I noticed a photo of Steph, a friend of a friend, on Facebook, and thought she’d make a good model; she was keen to have some photos taken, and came along with two friends. We spent an hour wandering around my old college, St. John’s, on a partly-cloudy Sunday afternoon. They enjoyed the fun of the photoshoot, and liked plenty of photos that I selected. I retouched a few of the photos (I fix cropping, brightness and colour on every photo I take anyway), to give them the magazine-model look. Here are a few of my favourites:
