Ballet Fashion – Varsity / Cambridge Ballerina Project

I started the Cambridge Ballerina Project in June 2010, and have since photographed 13 ballet dancers from the Cambridge University Ballet Club. The images caught the attention of the current Varsity Fashion Editor, Leah Schabas, who approached me to be the photographer for one of the newspaper’s fashion spreads. She had an idea that combined ballet and fashion (not necessarily because of the popularity of Black Swan, but it would definitely scratch the public’s itch for more ballet imagery).

We met weeks before the spread was to be published in the paper, and bounced emails back and forth about ideas and logistics. She arranged permission to shoot in the Fitzwilliam Museum, and acquired designer dresses and accessories from various sources. I provided contact details for hair and make-up artists (both Cambridge students I’d worked with before), and the ballet club president nominated 4-5 dancers as the models. Unsurprisingly, I’d already met and shot with them all before, except for Glory, who was to play one of the leads in the forthcoming annual ballet show. Sadly, Jenny had pulled a hamstring in the ADC dance show Inspired, so wasn’t able to take part in the shoot. These were all the models I would have chosen, as they are all truly beautiful dancers and models.

Our shooting slot in the Founder’s Entrance of the museum was from 9am – 12:30pm. This meant that hair and make-up started at 6:30am! I joined them at 8am to get some preparation photos, and also because I prefer to be involved in the whole creative process, not just during the shoot. Megan Riddington once again did a great job with the make-up, and Hannah Punter (a ballet dancer whom I met during Inspired) managed to make ballet buns look beautiful.

At 9am (or a while later as the finishing touches were being done to hair and make-up), we braved the winds and walked to the back entrance of the Fitzwilliam Museum, signed in as contractors, and got set up / changed. I already had firm ideas about shooting angles in the vast marble atrium, and Leah was on hand to match up dancers, dresses and their accessories.

The enclosed location, off-camera lighting, and well-defined “fashion” brief made this feel more like a studio shoot than one of my usual Cambridge Ballerina Project shoots, but I still relished having such beautiful muses with whom to create and capture ballet AND fashion imagery that I’ve been focusing on for the last year.

I normally work on location or in a studio with just the model, so it was great to work with a team and end up with a set of images whose sum is greater than its parts.

A very hearty thank you to all involved:

Cambridge Ballerina Project – Gabby & Helen

I’d seen Helen dance in the CU Ballet Show last February, so I was keen to finally arrange a ballet photoshoot with her. And at a recent dance audition, I met Gabby, who was keen to join in the Cambridge Ballerina Project fun and share a shoot with Helen at the end of the academic term. Rather than postpone the shoot because of the unexpected cold weather and snow, the two were even more keen to model in the snow.

Cambridge Ballerina Project – Sinead

After the beautiful autumnal shoot with Hanna, I arranged a similar shoot with another ballet dancer, Sinead, whom I’ve known for several years through Cambridge’s dance scene. She danced with the Norwegian National Ballet for a year before coming to Cambridge, and has been involved in Cambridge Contemporary Dance throughout her degrees here. Luckily for us, the date we picked for this shoot was yet another rare day of sunshine amidst days of grey cloud.

Cambridge Ballerina Project – Hanna

It seems that Autumn suddenly caught everyone’s attention, as a spate of sunshine highlighted the stunning yellow leaves on the trees, as well as those that had started to fall. I’d been wanting to shoot with Hanna for a long while, as she assisted at Jenny & Natalie’s shoot, and has supplied me with dresses for several of my recent model photoshoots (particularly the red and black dresses in Iveta’s shoot). She only had an hour free, so we shot in Jesus college and Jesus Green, which afforded wonderful locations full of autumnal splendour.

Cambridge Dancers’ Club

One of the reasons that I photograph a lot of dance, is that I’m also passionate about dancing myself. Thanks to the breadth of opportunity and classes available in Cambridge, I’ve worked my way through Ballroom, Latin, Offbeat, Salsa, Acrobatic Rock’n’Roll, and Contemporary dance. Most of these styles are offered by Cambridge Dancers’ Club (CDC), which was, up until recently, the largest student society in Cambridge. They’re in the process of doing a large publicity drive to bring lots of new members to classes, which in turn feeds new members to the Cambridge University Dancesport Team, one of the most successful student dancesport teams in the country. While I was on the Cambridge University Rock’n’Roll Team, I created lots of publicity material for RnR classes and the CURnR Team, so CDC have commissioned me to create the new publicity material for this year. Having started on my Cambridge Ballerina Project this summer, I had the idea of a photoshoot in one of the most impressive locations in Cambridge (New Court, St. John’s), with 3-4 couples, representing each of the styles offered.

Cambridge Ballerina Project – Sandy

The fifth photoshoot of the Cambridge Ballerina Project. I’ve photographed Sandy in many contemporary dance shows over the last few years, and with her background in ballet as well as contemporary, she was always one of my top choices for a dance photoshoot, especially after one my photos of her graced the cover of a Cambridge magazine.

I always prefer shooting at Magic Hour (the hour before sunset when the light is golden, and everything it touches looks beautiful). However, Sandy wanted to shoot in the middle of town, on roads, roundabouts etc. Given the number of people occupying the streets around 8pm, we decided to shoot at sunrise. The results, I hope you’ll agree, were well worth Sandy’s 5am start, and my staying up all night in anticipation.

Cambridge Ballerina Project – Ellie & Emily

The fourth photoshoot of the Cambridge Ballerina Project, in Emmanuel College. Emily was one of the principal dancers in the recent CU Ballet Show “Sleeping Beauty”. Ellie is a friend of Jenny’s (whom I’d photographed in a previous Cambridge Ballerina Project photoshoot), and although I was apprehensive before the shoot, having no idea how photogenic or capable a dancer she was, I was immediately and very pleasantly surprised when she took up her first pose:

Ellie then went on to confirm that she was not only a great dancer, but also an inspiring muse.

Cambridge Ballerina Project – Chantelle

The third photoshoot of the Cambridge Ballerina Project, in St. John’s College, and The Backs. Chantelle was one of the principal dancers in the recent CU Ballet Show “Sleeping Beauty”. She has trained professionally, and has done several ballet photoshoots in the past. I felt bad that Chantelle’s beautiful white pointe shoes got slightly damaged and dirty during the shoot, but hopefully the gorgeous resulting photos make up for it.
